BESST II IOL POWER CALCULATOR

Dr Borasio graduated magna cum lauda from the University of Torino before specialising in Ophthalmology at the same University. A sub-specialist four-year training was then undertaken with multiple Fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. This included a one year Fellowship in Cataract Surgery with Mr Vincenzo Maurino in 2004, followed by an 18 months Fellowship in Laser Refractive Surgery with Mr Julian Stevens and a one year Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease with Miss Linda Ficker. In 2007 he moved to Dubai as Consultant Ophthalmologist in Cornea, Anterior Segment & Refractive Surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, where he worked till late 2014. In 2015 he took the position of Head of Corneal and Refractive Surgery Department in Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Dr Borasio has extensive experience in:

  1. LASIK, LASEK, PRK, EpiLASIK, TransPRK laser vision correction (Visx, Amaris and WaveLight excimer lasers; IntraLase and LenSx femtosecond lasers)

  2. ICL and Artisan/Artiflex phakic lens surgery implantation for the correction of severe myopia and refractive errors

  3. Femtosecond laser cataract surgery (LenSx)

  4. Management of keratoconus (collagen cross linking, intracorneal ring surgery such as INTACS SK, Kerarings, Ferrara rings, penetrating and partial thickness laser deep anterior lamellar corneal transplantation for advanced cases)

  5. Laser corneal transplantation: anterior lamellar keratoplasty, big bubble deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), full thickness penetrating keratoplasty (PK), endothelial corneal transplantation (DSAEK)

  6. Surgical management of high astigmatism (either congenital or following surgery such as corneal transplantation) by means of femtosecond laser Astigmatic Keratotomy or Toric ICL/Artisan/IOL implantation.

Dr Borasio is actively involved in research and has undertaken continuing collaborative research programs with colleagues in London, having authored many peer reviewed scientific papers on keratoconus, post-LASIK biometry and management of astigmatism during cataract surgery.

He is regularly on the Faculty of several international meetings and courses including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Refractive Subspecialty Day, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), the World Ophthalmic Congress (WOC), the Moorfields LASIK course and the SOI International Congress.

He is one of the few member of the very prestigious IOL Power Club (a non profit organization devolved to the advancing science of intraocular power calculation) and for many years since 2008 he has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal or Refractive Surgery.

He is the developer of BESSt 1 and BESST 2 formula for calculating lens power in post-LASIK and post-PRK cataract operations and has presented the results of his work at a number of international forums. The original article on BESSt 1 was published on the JCRS in 2006 and the method is described in details in a book buplished in 2012 (Elevation Based Corneal Tomography 2nd edition, Jaypee-Highlights, Editor Michael Belin). BESSt 2 was subsequently developed and presented at several international conferences but never published. According to our internal unpublished analysis this is still among the most accurate regression formulas in the world for this purpose.

In 2009 Dr Borasio developed the first ever ophthalmological app on iPhone/iPad for corneal and refractive surgery specialists (Eye Pro, AstigMASTER, AstigPLOT, VA Converter, Eye Sketch). These are continuously updated and are currently being used by thousands of ophthalmologist worldwide.
